Response Questions 2 (ZH)

1. Linnaeus method of classification was a way used to organize early zoos. Instead of grouping animals who come from like environments they were grouped by class, species, genera and what not. This created terrible problems as there was no accommodations to the animals most of the time and would be cooped into cages where they could not fully turn or stand. This brings along the notion of "stamp collecting" where animals would be massively collected with out thought of future in terms of health and over population.
2.It was thought that making these collections would offer preservation or rather a Noah's-Arks-savior sort of situation and which gave a huge justification of the competitive nature that came with the, for lack of a better term, "Zoological Movement." Many private Zoo's where thought to be above natural history collections as the supported living creatures. The hierarchy became very apparent especially toward the 1800's when what today is A LOT of money was spent on these private zoos.
3. Zoo's have not always been a safe havens for animals but rather the cause for a need for safe havens. Zoo's would breed animals to have cute babies in which families could come a coo at but these babies grew up and Zoo's could not support the extreme over population of these animals. The result was the sale of animals as pets and to people whom are not authorized. The  showboating of animals was was created out of financial gain and had no interests in what animals wanted. Care for life in Zoo's is where animals are taken care of and not over breeded and are given a proper enviroment to live.

  1. Nice answers! Though what about the Berger reading? You really should do it, not only because it was assigned, but because it is thought provoking as well.
