TB

1.) The Taxonomic method of classifying influenced the design of the zoo by making the displays very organized by the species genus. Viewing animals as a "stamp collection" is problematic because it objectifies living creatures. It is not healthy for animals to be confined to small cages or to travel often. It also put a focus on collecting a full range of species and became a conquest instead of a means for perserving.
*Just as a side note, I disagree with the author when they stated that the modern view of death in relationship to recreation has changed from the past view. I think it is just that people don't know the history of the park at all so they carry on like it has always been a park.
2.) Being educated in natural history became a fashion of sorts. Since the wealthy were the only people able to access natural history resources, the middle class became very excited when free zoo like LPZ opened up for them and their families. The middle class now had access to the tools that would allow them to educate themselves and their children about "God's Creations". They would go to outings at the zoo in their best attire in order to feel wealthy and blend in.
3.) The zoos began breeding programs thinking about the public wanting to see baby animals instead of considering how much space they had for them when they grew in the future. There was a surplus of animals because of this so the zoos had to sell them to the public as exotic pets and to circuses. The quality of the animals life became lessend. LPZ was very guilty of doing this. They were a showboat zoo and were not considering the health and well being of the animal. In some ways I still think they could improve there facilities and enclosures.
4.) We no longer see ourselves existing in the same world as animals. We separate ourselves because we have become industrialized. Our living depends not so much on survival but on morals and self actualization. Because animals do not have their own ethical views, we make decisions for them. We can put animals in cages, place our gaze upon them, and forget that we our stuck within limitations of our own. Our boundaries, cultural views, and atmosphere become less of cage when we can kennel our dogs with only four inches of space for them to roam.
