Tanner Bowman: Exercising at the LPZoo

(1) What are the TWO most interesting facts / bits of information you’ve come across so far in your research
for the project (include an image for each one, please).

My project began from the absurd notion of hosting yoga program for Lincoln Park mothers and their children-almost as a joke or a challenge. Now I have begun exploring how to make an almost offensive topic into a reality. I have eliminated the idea that the program would be only for Mothers and Lincoln Park Residents. This way the program keeps fathers, tourists, and all of Chicago's diverse communities in mind. I also decide to change from yoga to just exercise and movement overall. Then I decided that an exercise class was unnecessary and moved on to incorporating an exercise circuit into the zoo's map. The visitor will see the circuit marked out on the map and will be informed to buy the exercise pamphlet at the gift shop. The proceeds from the pamphlet will go to the zoo and should be affordable. The exercisers will follow the instructions on the map and will complete the circuit while engaging with the animals and learning facts about conservation.

To begin making a exercise circuit I looked at the map of the zoo and the arrangement of the zoo's animals

I decided that the west-middle entrance (by the seals) would be the best spot to start the circuit. Every exercise is outdoor and the circuit goes in a counter clockwise direction.

(2) What have you accomplished/completed so far in the in the project (background research, source material
acquisition, a first draft, etc?)

This is the order of the circuit:

1.) Side bend stretch- Seal
Light jog
2.) Sprint-Jaguar
3.) Quad Stretch-Flamingos
Light jog
4.) Knee Raises-Kangaroo
Walk
5.) Hydrate-Camels
Light jog
6.) Jumping Jacks-Outdoor birds
Light jog
7.) Mountain Climbers-Sun bear
8.) Lunges-Giraffes
9.) Cool Down/Stretch-Rhinos
*Done*

All of the exercises consider the animals movements or behaviors and are easy enough for adults to teach their children.

(3) What are the components that you need to focus on and complete in the next week?

I need to Research:
-the exercises
-the animal's facts.
-exercise book language
-conservation programs
-Water fountains
-Zoo Rules
-Printing costs

(4) What is a still unresolved part of your project that you would like feedback on?

I would like some opinions on how I could make the program less objectifying of the animals and more engaging and feeling connected to them.

Also if you can think of any exercises that would work well with the outdoor animals that I havent though of, I would like to know. (I am purposely skipping the apes and monkeys because I feel exercising in front of the would be especially unethical).

Catchy title for the program that engages both adults and children?

Any constructive feedback would be much appreciated.

Also I hope you enjoy this photo as much as I did

THATS THE SPIRIT!

  2. Hey Tanner!

This is really cute and fun. I like it. I don't think you need to worry about it being 'unethical' to exercise in front of animals. It may be considered cruel, but its no different from all the people that walk past the animals every day. I don't think any of the animals will notice the difference and consider it in their day to day life.

Though maybe the primates would. I think you are on to something there.

Are there any boxing type exercises one could do by the kangaroos? Kangaroos box and can stand on their tails to do so.

As far as the pamphlet itself, I have made a lot of zines and I would be happy if you need any help formatting/arranging/printing! If you let me know how you are thinking of it (how big, how many pages, color or black and white) I would be excited to help you out in formatting it.

    Like this! http://www.cartoonistsleague.org/how-to-make-a-no-staple-mini-comic-or-zine/

If it is going to be fairly small there is a lot you can do with just folding up a single sheet of paper (like a pamphlet or a minizine). If it is going to be longer you have to arrange the pages to be in a printed layout when you fold the paper together and nestle the pages.

  3. Tanner this is such a good idea. The zoo is a great and entertaining place for families to get exercise together. I'm interested in how you will incorporate conservation information into a fast pace tour like this. I think it is more of a long-term awareness thing, if families go to the zoo for this, kids are more likely to grow up with a positive idea and sense of importance of the animals and the role the zoo played in their lives.
The exercises themselves are funny and creative. I would actually do this. I will brain storm some ideas for names of workouts.
As far as information in the handout, it will be all about layout and presentation. I suggest making the facts as short and sweet as possible, because people are honestly less likely to delve into a 3 paragraph essay on conservation. Make it fun and positive, and pose questions for adults to ask kids, so they can both get thinking.
I think this is a really positive experience, and realistic for visitors.

  4. Thank you all for your feedback! I appreciate it a ton! I am posting a few notes for myself:
-Placards along side animal information already given at the enclosure
    -Focus on map
    -Respect surroundings
    -Research exercise for disabled people
-Contact zoo higher ups.... maybe this idea could actually work and they would be interested in hearing a pitch.
    -Consider space
-Estimate time (possible video documentation and run-through)
    -Design visual identity
-Perhaps this could be more of a pitch presentation than an actual product (we could do a short segment of the circuit on the day of, maybe cheesy exercise clothes...)

  6. Hey! Stephanie here... I think for possible titles it might be a good idea to references a title (maybe a song that mentions fitness, or the name of fitness tape from the past?) that adults would get and obviously a title that sounds fun to perform for the younger audience.
